Launch of Euro-Argo ONE project!
Launch of Euro-Argo ONE project: fostering Euro-Argo ERIC’s role in the ambitious OneArgo vision
The Euro-Argo Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) is proud to announce the launch of the Euro-Argo ONE project, a groundbreaking European project that will significantly enhance Europe’s contribution to the global OneArgo programme. This challenging project aims to align Euro-Argo ERIC with the OneArgo objectives, advancing global ocean observation and climate research to unprecedented levels. Launched a decade after the creation of the Euro-Argo ERIC, this project marks a pivotal moment in the consortium's evolution, as it embraces the transformative OneArgo vision at a time when unified, global ocean observation is more crucial than ever.
The Euro-Argo ONE project, supported by 23 partners, seeks to strengthen the European capability, sustainability, and resilience required to fulfill its vital role in implementing the global OneArgo array. By addressing key scientific, technical, and environmental challenges, Euro-Argo ONE will not only bolster the Euro-Argo ERIC but also enhance its ability to deliver actionable ocean data and services.
Key objectives of the Euro-Argo ONE project
- Tailoring European implementation of OneArgo. Designing a comprehensive and scalable plan to support OneArgo’s global objectives within Europe.
- Optimising OneArgo data and services delivery. Increasing the efficiency of Euro-Argo ERIC in providing high-quality OneArgo data and products.
- Addressing environmental challenges of OneArgo. Tackling operational challenges in collaboration with the supplier industry to ensure sustainability and resilience.
- Enhancing OneArgo products and services. Improving data accessibility and services efficiency for operational stakeholders and the broader scientific community.
- Strengthening leadership and collaboration. Consolidating Euro-Argo ERIC’s position in international and European ocean observation networks.
- Demonstrating societal value of OneArgo. Showcasing the critical role of OneArgo in addressing societal challenges, from climate adaptation to marine ecosystem health.
The Euro-Argo ONE project will accelerate Euro-Argo ERIC’s consolidation as a keystone of the ENVRI cluster of European environmental Research Infrastructures, ensuring a sustainable, long-term European contribution to the OneArgo programme. This effort will advance understanding of the ocean’s complexities, refine climate models, and strengthen Europe’s ability to confront pressing environmental challenges.
Euro-Argo ERIC invites stakeholders across the scientific, industrial, and policy realms to join in this transformative journey towards a more sustainable future for ocean observation and climate action.
OneArgo in a nutshell
OneArgo represents the new "global, full-depth, and multidisciplinary" evolution of the Argo programme.
The objectives of OneArgo include expanding the geographical coverage of the Argo array, increasing the deployment of diverse types of profiling floats, and ensuring that data management teams are fully prepared to handle new data streams—particularly those associated with the Biogeochemical (BGC) mission and its six variables. Additionally, the programme aims at strengthening national and international partnerships, fostering strong community support, and enhancing advocacy efforts.
OneArgo would revolutionise our ability to observe and predict the impact of climate change on oceanic heat uptake, global water cycle and sea level rise, as well as ocean ecology, metabolism, carbon uptake, and marine resource modelling. Most importantly, it would dramatically increase end-user value and the benefits for society at large, for instance through more accurate climate projections enabling better societal adaptation or better climate intelligence to sensitive industries (agriculture, energy, aquaculture, fisheries, insurance, and resource extraction).
