OneArgo at OceanPredict’24
The OceanPredict 2024 Symposium, organized by the OceanPredict/ForeSea programme was held from November 18-22 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The event proposed over 300 contributions from the international ocean predictions community (orals and posters), among them several focussed on OneArgo.
A general presentation of OneArgo achievements, status and outlook was made by Brian King (NOC, Argo Steering Team co-chair) and the European perspective for the OneArgo implementation was presented by Claire Gourcuff (Euro-Argo ERIC, Argo Data Management Team co-chair) the same day.
Several presentations highlighted the role of Argo for ocean predictions in various applications (e.g. Shoichio Kido (JAMSTEC)’s talk on SynObs preliminary results for Core-Argo) and Argo was mentioned many times during the week, both in parallel and plenary sessions, including the extensions to high latitudes and the role of BGC-Argo. Raphaëlle Sauzède (LOV)’s presentation contributed to promote the BGC dataset, by showing how machine learning techniques allow to enhance the BGC-Argo Chlorophyll-a data quality and uniformity. The use of BGC-Argo data for improving biogeochemical model parametrisation was underlined in Quentin Hyvernat (CNRS/MOi)’s presentation.
A poster presenting how to access and use the evolving OneArgo data stream was also displayed and allowed to discuss with a wide audience on various topics related to OneArgo. The urgent need to step up efforts to achieve a full OneArgo implementation by the end of the decade was brought out to the symposium participants, and received strong support.
Brian King participated in the OceanPredict Steering Committee meeting on the last day, opening perspectives for enhanced links between OneArgo and OceanPredict in the future.
